Southwest Gas Holdings has submitted a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) procurement agreement to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), aiming to bring RNG to California customers. The company's subsidiary, Centuri Group, provides utility infrastructure services across North America. The RNG procurement agreement will allow Southwest Gas to provide RNG to its customers, promoting renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Southwest Gas Holdings has taken a significant step towards promoting renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by submitting a Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) procurement agreement to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). The agreement, which aims to bring RNG to California customers, is a milestone in meeting the state's goals to reduce emissions from short-lived climate pollutants.
The procurement agreement, between Southwest Gas, Anew Climate LLC, and Anaergia, Inc. (Anaergia) subsidiary SoCal Biomethane, LLC (SCB), marks an important step in supporting the state's goals under Senate Bill (SB) 1440. If approved, the agreement will fulfill regulatory requirements for gas utilities to procure biomethane, which helps reduce methane emissions.
Under this agreement, RNG produced at the SCB facility located at the Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority (VVWRA) will be cleaned and upgraded to pipeline-quality natural gas. This gas will then be injected into Southwest Gas' California system for distribution to its customers. The facility can accept up to 65,000 gallons of slurried food waste daily, diverting an estimated 104,000 tons of organic waste per year. This project not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also provides economic benefits to the community by employing local staff.
The agreement has the potential to reduce emissions from natural gas delivered to Southwest Gas' California customers by up to 11,841 MTCO2e per year, equivalent to emissions from 2,762 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year. This is a significant contribution to California's broader environmental goals.
Southwest Gas Holdings is committed to providing access to safe, affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy. The company's subsidiary, Centuri Group, provides utility infrastructure services across North America, further emphasizing Southwest Gas' dedication to sustainable energy solutions.
