South Korea says Roche signs 710B won investment MOU

South Korea Announces Roche’s 710 Billion Won Investment to Boost Biohealth Sector

South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) announced on March 3, 2026, that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Swiss pharmaceutical giant Roche to enhance the global competitiveness of the country’s biohealth industry. Under the agreement, Roche will invest 710 billion won (US$486 million) over five years to advance clinical trials in South Korea, focusing on high-incidence diseases, rare conditions, and advanced biopharmaceuticals. The investment also includes support for domestic R&D talent development and collaboration with local biohealth companies to facilitate global market expansion.

Health and Welfare Minister Jeong Eun-kyeong emphasized that the MOU aims to elevate South Korea’s clinical trial capabilities and accelerate growth in the biohealth sector. Roche’s Jorg-Michael Rupp highlighted the partnership’s potential to strengthen synergies and core industry competitiveness.

In addition to this agreement, Roche Korea has separately committed 170 billion won (US$153.7 million) over five years with the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI) to establish a precision medicine ecosystem. This collaboration involves digital solutions, genome analysis services, and joint training programs to foster expertise in precision medicine.

The investments align with broader U.S.-South Korea efforts to secure pharmaceutical supply chains and advance biotechnology collaboration, as outlined in the October 2025 U.S.-Korea Technology Prosperity Deal. These initiatives reflect South Korea’s strategic focus on strengthening its biohealth industry through public-private partnerships and international cooperation.

With Roche’s dual commitments, South Korea aims to solidify its position as a global hub for innovation in biopharmaceuticals and precision medicine.
