South Africa Signals Breakthrough in Health-Insurance Impasse

The South African government has taken a significant step towards addressing the long-standing disparities in healthcare access and quality by introducing the National Health Insurance (NHI) Bill. This legislation aims to centralize the country's health expenditure into a single fund, providing free healthcare services to all South Africans at the point of care. The NHI Fund will pay for all medical care at a set rate, ensuring that services in both public and private facilities are free at the point of care and funded by general taxes as well as mandatory contributions from employers and wage-earners proportional to their income.
