Solar Industries India: explosion occurred at Nagpur facility
Nagpur, Maharashtra: A powerful explosion occurred at Solar Industries’ explosives unit in Bazargaon, approximately 40 kilometers from Nagpur city, late Wednesday night. The incident resulted in one fatality and at least 10 injuries, with several workers sustaining serious wounds from flying debris. The explosion took place between 12 and 12:30 am, causing significant damage to the safety and commercial explosives unit.
Eyewitnesses described the impact as severe, with many workers thrown off their feet by stones and debris. Continuous smoke was observed for nearly 20 minutes before the blast, which reduced parts of the unit to rubble. Injured workers were rushed to nearby private hospitals, with a significant number admitted to Dhande Hospital in Nagpur. Dr Nripal Dhande, the ICU in-charge, confirmed that 22-23 people had been treated at the hospital, with nine patients, including two women, remaining under observation. Two of the patients were in critical condition and on ventilator support [1].
This is the second major blast at the Bazargaon unit in less than two years. In December 2023, a massive explosion at the same facility had killed nine workers. NCP (SP) leader Anil Deshmukh expressed concern over the incident, highlighting the need for strict adherence to safety measures and proper enforcement of industrial safety norms [2].
The police quickly secured the factory premises and launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion. Heavy security deployment remained in place through the night. The incident has raised questions about the safety measures and regulatory oversight at the facility.
