Solana has implemented a significant upgrade to its mainnet, known as SIMD-0075, which introduces passkeys for secure wallet access. This enhancement is designed to improve both the security and convenience of crypto wallets, making them more user-friendly for everyday use. Passkeys provide a more secure method of logging in by authenticating users through biometrics, such as facial recognition or fingerprints, or physical items like YubiKeys. Solana's new upgrade allows these passkeys to be verified on-chain in a safe and fully integrated manner.

The integration of passkeys represents a substantial improvement in user experience.

wallets now support biometric sign-ins, passkey two-factor authentication, and a more secure and smoother onboarding process for new users. This eliminates the need for users to copy and store seed phrases, simplifying the process while providing enhanced security. The passkeys redefine the wallet user experience by offering a seamless biometric login and native Ed25519 signing that works out of the box.

However, there was a technical hurdle to overcome. Most passkeys use cryptography based on the P-256 curve, which is not compatible with Solana's Ed25519 signing method. To address this, Para, a developer toolkit, was introduced. Para's SDK allows developers to combine passkey logins with actual transaction signing. When a user logs in using their passkey, Para utilizes Multi-Party Computation (MPC) to generate an Ed25519 signature that Solana can understand. This solution ensures that passkeys can be used effectively within the Solana ecosystem.

The update demonstrates Solana's commitment to enhancing real-world functionality. Passkey support is now live on the Solana mainnet, offering a convenient and secure way to access wallets without the need for passwords. With Para, users can log in with their fingerprint and continue to sign real transactions, providing a smooth transition to Web3. This development underscores Solana's focus on both speed and practical usability, making it a more attractive option for users seeking secure and convenient crypto wallet solutions.
