SoCalGas Petitions CPUC to Modify Hydrogen Blending Decision

Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) and other utilities have submitted a petition to the California Public Utilities Commission to modify a 2022 decision requiring demonstration projects for blending up to 5% hydrogen into natural gas. The utilities argue that the safety case for low-level blends has advanced since the order, and propose to remove the requirement for 5% demonstration projects before recommending a systemwide blending standard. However, they still support developing demonstration projects for blends in the 5%-20% range.
