Snowflake, a data cloud and AI company, has launched its platform on AWS in South Africa. The platform enables customers to consolidate data, apply AI, build data applications, and share data products through a consumption-based business model. Its cloud-native architecture includes three scalable layers: compute, storage, and cloud services. The compute layer provides dedicated resources, the storage layer ingests massive data varieties, and ClearQuery allows users to rapidly search, explore, and analyze data using natural language queries.
Snowflake Inc. (NYSE: SNOW), a leading AI Data Cloud company, has announced the general availability of its platform on Amazon Web Services (AWS) Africa (Cape Town) Region. This development marks a significant milestone in Snowflake's commitment to supporting local organizations with faster, cost-efficient, and secure data solutions that meet stringent data residency regulations.
The launch comes at a critical time for organizations to align with local data residency regulations, such as the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and South Africa’s National Policy on Data and Cloud. These regulations require that personal data be processed within the country, and Snowflake’s deployment on AWS Africa (Cape Town) Region brings data closer to customers, thereby enhancing trust in their cloud infrastructure.
Luan Reineck, Country Manager for South Africa, stated, "Snowflake’s expansion in South Africa is a pivotal step in our commitment to supporting and empowering local organizations with faster, cost-efficient, and secure data solutions that enable customers to meet local data regulations, all without compromising on performance or innovation."
Customers such as Carry1st, BluNova, and Mukuru are already leveraging Snowflake’s AI Data Cloud to drive business decision-making and capitalize on AI within a secure and governed platform. For instance, Carry1st has reduced infrastructure costs by up to 45% and improved data refresh rates by over 300% by using Snowflake’s platform.
The deployment on AWS Africa (Cape Town) Region offers regional customers further flexibility in choosing a geographical region that best suits their operational needs. Additionally, Snowflake is collaborating with its diverse network of system integration partners to drive the One Million Minds initiative, designed to empower learners globally with training and the development of cutting-edge AI skills.
Snowflake will host a launch event on September 3 at The Old Biscuit Mill in Cape Town to celebrate this significant milestone and provide businesses with unmatched scalability, security, and performance.
