SNAP--

Snapchat is introducing paid Memories cloud storage plans, capping free storage at 5GB. Users can upgrade to 100GB, 250GB, or 5TB of space, with the latter two options tied to Snapchat+ and Snapchat Premium. The company has given users 12 months to export their data or upgrade to a paid plan.

Snapchat, the popular social media platform, has announced new paid storage options for its Memories feature, effective immediately. The company is capping free storage at 5GB, a significant reduction from its previous limit. Users with more than 5GB of saved content will need to upgrade to paid plans to retain their Memories.

Snapchat offers several upgrade options: a 100GB plan, a 250GB option available with Snapchat+, and a 5TB plan for Snapchat Premium subscribers. For those who exceed the 5GB threshold but choose not to upgrade immediately, Snapchat will provide 12 months of temporary storage before requiring payment. Users can also download their Memories directly to their devices at any time.

The introduction of paid storage plans is a response to the rapid growth of the Memories feature since its launch in 2016. Snapchat users have collectively saved over 1 trillion Memories on the platform, necessitating the introduction of paid tiers to support continued service. The company acknowledged the challenges of transitioning from a free to paid service model but stated these changes will allow for continued investment in improving the Memories feature for all users.
