Slate Auto, a startup based in Michigan and backed by Jeff Bezos, has introduced its latest creation: an electric truck priced at $25,000. This new vehicle is set to challenge established brands like
and Rivian, offering a unique combination of affordability and customization. The truck, which can also be converted into an SUV, boasts a range of 150 miles on a single charge and is powered by a 52.7 kilowatt-hour battery pack. The electric motor generates 201 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque, enabling a 0-60 mph acceleration in 8.0 seconds and a top speed of 90 mph. Charging is facilitated through an NACS port, with a maximum charge speed of 120 kW on compatible DC charging stations, allowing for a 20-80% charge in under 30 minutes. One of the standout features of the Slate Truck is its customizability. The vehicle comes with a "flat-pack accessory SUV kit" that allows owners to transform the truck into a five-seat SUV. This kit includes a roll cage, rear
bench, airbags, and a body . The design is flexible, allowing for different body styles, including a boxy, Defender-like top and a fastback-style slanted roofline reminiscent of the Rivian R3. Additionally, owners can opt for an 84.3-kWh battery pack that extends the range to 240 miles, which can be specified from the factory or upgraded later. The Slate Truck is designed with a philosophy of simplicity and affordability. The vehicle is produced in a single configuration, with a focus on reducing unnecessary content to lower costs and increase reliability. The interior is stripped down, featuring hand-cranked windows, a DIY dashboard, and a lack of a central infotainment screen. Instead, the truck encourages users to bring their own technology, with a phone mount and USB power for navigation and media playback. The cabin includes manual HVAC controls, cruise control, and power locks, with the only screen being the instrument cluster in front of the driver.
Safety is a priority for Slate, with every truck equipped with active emergency braking, forward collision warning, and up to eight airbags. The company claims the truck is designed to achieve the highest safety ratings in crashes. The Slate Truck will be sold directly to consumers through an online ordering system, with deliveries expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. Reservations are available for $50 and are refundable. Service needs will be handled by an unnamed partner, ensuring a seamless ownership experience.
The unveiling of the Slate Truck marks a significant step for the electric vehicle market, offering a cost-effective and customizable option for consumers. With its unique features and competitive pricing, Slate Auto aims to disrupt the market and provide an alternative to more expensive electric trucks. The company's focus on simplicity and affordability positions it well to attract budget-conscious buyers looking for a reliable and versatile electric vehicle.
