The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) has announced that starting from June 30th, all overseas cryptocurrency companies serving Singaporean customers must obtain a license or cease operations. This move is part of MAS's efforts to combat financial crime risks and regulate the digital token service providers (DTSPs) operating in Singapore.
MAS will fully implement Section 137 of the Financial Services and Markets Act (FSM Act), which grants the regulator the authority to license and regulate DTSPs. This regulation extends to companies incorporated in Singapore or those with Singaporean employees, even if they primarily serve overseas users.
This regulatory action underscores Singapore's commitment to maintaining a robust financial system by ensuring that all cryptocurrency service providers adhere to stringent regulatory standards. By requiring overseas companies to obtain a license,
aims to mitigate the risks associated with unregulated digital token services, including money laundering and fraud. The implementation of this regulation is expected to have a significant impact on the cryptocurrency industry, as it will force overseas companies to either comply with Singapore's regulatory framework or withdraw from the market. This move is likely to enhance the transparency and security of digital token services in Singapore, aligning with the country's broader efforts to foster a safe and innovative financial ecosystem.
Analysts predict that this regulatory change will prompt many overseas cryptocurrency companies to seek licensing in Singapore, recognizing the region's status as a leading financial hub. However, it remains to be seen how many companies will choose to comply with the new regulations versus those that will opt to cease operations in Singapore.
