Silicon Labs unveiled the BG2B on August 4th - a Bluetooth 6 Low Energy SoC it calls the industry's best combination of power efficiency, security, and integrations. The chip delivers Channel Sounding (the Bluetooth 6 distance-measurement protocol), integrated CAN-FD for vehicle bus connectivity, dual ADCs, LED drivers, Secure Vault High security, and 1.1 µA sleep current with RAM retention. It claims 14–15% lower MCU active current compared to Silicon Labs' own prior lowest-power Bluetooth LE SoC.

The product is real. The engineering is competent. The stock, which is up 66.8% year-to-date and trades at $218 with a $7.2 billion market cap, has absolutely nothing to do with the BG2B.

The product - it ships, it's good, but it's not first

Let's assess the BG2B on its own merits before the stock distortion becomes the whole story.

The spec sheet checks out as internally consistent. A dual-output DC-DC power architecture with a multi-core design can plausibly deliver 14–15% active-current reduction over the BG22 family, which launched in 2020 with 3.6 mA TX at 0 dBm and 2.6 mA RX. The 1.1 µA EM2 sleep current (Silicon Labs' second-low-power sleep mode, where RAM is retained) is in the range that enables multi-year coin-cell operation for sleepy IoT devices like asset tags and wireless sensors.

Channel Sounding - Bluetooth 6's secure ranging protocol that lets devices measure actual distance rather than just signal strength - is the headline feature. Silicon LabsSLAB-- claims support for Mode 3, NADM (Normalized Attack Detector Metric), and Inline PCT, and says it meets Apple and Google specifications. It also offers a royalty-free ranging library.

The problem is timing, not engineering.

Nordic Semiconductor - the market leader in BLE SoCs - already demonstrated Channel Sounding on its nRF54L15 at Embedded World in March 2026. Channel Sounding adoption in 2026 is being driven by smartphones, which account for roughly 84% of projected Bluetooth 6.x shipments. Peripheral devices - headsets, tablets, wearables - represent about 15%. Automotive is the fastest-growing segment after consumer, but it's still a fraction of the total.

Silicon Labs does not supply smartphone platforms. That market belongs to Qualcomm, MediaTek, Broadcom, and Apple's own silicon. The BG2B targets electronic shelf labels, asset tracking, industrial monitoring, smart home, and vehicle diagnostics. These are all real markets. They are also the markets where Nordic, STMicroelectronics, and Dialog Semiconductor (now part of Lite-On) already compete aggressively.

The BG2B is a strong product aimed at a market segment Silicon Labs already plays in, against competitors who are already ahead on the one feature this chip is built to showcase.

The stock - this is what the price actually reflects

Now the part that matters to investors. Silicon Labs trades at 8.8x trailing revenue. Its nearest peers in the digital chip design space:

  • Diodes Inc. (DIOD): 2.4x trailing revenue
  • Skyworks Solutions (SWKS): 2.3x trailing revenue

Silicon Labs trades at nearly four times the revenue multiple of either peer. You could argue that SLAB's 25% revenue growth justifies the premium - its 1Q 2026 results showed $214 million in revenue, up 20% year-over-year, with industrial and commercial revenue up 33%. The book-to-bill ratio hit a multi-year high.

But the stock is not priced for 25% revenue growth. It is priced for an acquisition.

Silicon Labs has a pending merger with Texas Instruments. CEO Matt Johnson said in the 1Q 2026 earnings call that the merger "continues to advance," and the company has suspended forward guidance because of it. The $218 share price - up from $115.50 at the 52-week low - reflects acquisition premium and deal-speculation bidding, not organic product leadership.   • Revenue growth is real. 25% YoY growth, accelerating industrial bookings, ESL and smart metering strength. The design win momentum exceeded the 2025 run rate, which was itself a record year.
  • Profitability is not. Gross margin is 59.3%, which is good for an fabless semiconductor company. But operating margin is negative 6.8%, free cash flow collapsed 80.8%, and ROIC is negative. The company is investing heavily and burning cash to grow. That is sustainable only if the growth holds or the acquisition closes.
  • The merger is the pricing engine. With forward guidance suspended and the deal in limbo, the stock is being traded as a binary event - deal closes at a premium or it doesn't. Product launches, design wins, and market share gains are secondary to that binary.
  • The product is solid but not category-defining. BG2B is a competent entry into Bluetooth 6. It is not the first. Its strongest differentiator (CAN-FD integration) serves a niche market. Nordic and Qualcomm are ahead on the mainstream Channel Sounding adoption curve.

Directionally

Silicon Labs is running a good organic business - 25% growth, strong design wins, broadening into industrial IoT. The BG2B is evidence of that trajectory, not the driver of the stock price.

The stock is priced as if Texas Instruments is coming to acquire it at a substantial premium. If that deal closes, the product roadmap becomes a footnote. If the deal breaks, the stock reverts to the fundamentals - which are good growth, negative operating margins, and a competitive landscape where Nordic leads on the exact feature this chip showcases.

The BG2B is real silicon from a competent engineering team. The stock is priced for a corporate transaction. Those are two entirely different theses, and investors treating them as the same thing are buying a merger arb spread dressed up as a product story.
