Sernova owns the delivery system. The Cell Pouch is the only implantable and retrievable cell containment system for islet engraftment currently in U.S. clinical trials, pre-vascularized prior to transplantation. A Phase 1/2 trial demonstrated donor islet cell survival in patients ranging from one year to more than five years, with some achieving insulin independence. In April 2025, the trial's Data and Safety Management Board endorsed advancing to Cohort C. The device works.

Seraxis brings the cells. In March 2025, Vertex announced that VX-264 failed to meet efficacy endpoints and would not advance further in clinical trials. The device approach didn't work well enough for Vertex's cells.

That doesn't prove the Cell Pouch won't work with Seraxis's cells — different cell lines, different manufacturing processes, different biology. But it does suggest the delivery mechanism may not be the primary differentiator. The cell quality appears to be.
