U.S. Secret Service, Canadian Authorities Disrupt $4.3M Ethereum Phishing Scam

The U.S. Secret Service, in collaboration with Canadian law enforcement and financial regulators, has successfully targeted a significant Ethereum phishing scam as part of "Operation Avalanche." This operation aimed to identify compromised wallets on the Ethereum blockchain and warn affected users about the potential loss of their assets. The scam, known as an approval phishing scheme, defrauded victims of approximately $4.3 million.

In a coordinated effort, the U.S. Secret Service Washington Field Office worked alongside the BC Securities Commission and other Canadian authorities. The initiative involved multiple Canadian police agencies, crypto trading platforms, and a blockchain analysis firm. The goal was to disrupt the ongoing scam and assist victims by providing them with crucial information about the loss and potential loss of their assets.

Special Agent in Charge Matt McCool of the Washington Field Office highlighted the importance of international cooperation in combating crypto crime.
