The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has appointed Jamie
as the new Director of the Division of Trading and Markets. Selway, a former executive at Blockchain, will assume his role on June 17. This appointment comes at a time when the SEC is intensifying its scrutiny and regulatory actions on various segments of the cryptocurrency market. Selway's background in blockchain technology and financial services is expected to bring a fresh perspective to the division, which oversees the regulation of the U.S. securities markets and their participants.SEC Chairman Paul Atkins highlighted that Selway's appointment is part of a broader effort to ensure that the agency’s regulations balance costs and benefits. Atkins has sought to distance the regulatory agency from the high-profile enforcement actions overseen by Gary Gensler, the previous chair. Gensler launched legal battles against numerous crypto firms, including industry giants. Since Gensler stepped down in January, many of those cases have been closed.
Atkins has expressed a more crypto-friendly stance, acknowledging that the SEC’s “legacy rules and regulations” do not contemplate the novel use cases of blockchain technology. He emphasized the need for the United States to be the ‘crypto capital of the planet’ and for the Commission to keep pace with innovation. Atkins aims to develop a rational regulatory framework for crypto asset markets that establishes clear rules for the issuance, custody, and trading of crypto assets while continuing to discourage bad actors from violating the law.
Selway's appointment is seen as a strategic move to shape the future of the SEC's approach to cryptocurrency regulation. His expertise in blockchain technology and financial services is expected to help the SEC navigate the complexities of the crypto market and develop regulations that foster innovation while protecting investors. This appointment is part of a series of senior appointments made by the SEC, reflecting its commitment to strengthening its regulatory framework in response to the evolving financial landscape.
