Scripps wins five National Edward R. Murrow Awards for 2025. WTVR, based in Richmond, won "Overall Excellence" in the small-market television category. Scripps News received recognition in the News Documentary category for "In Real Life: Hidden War". Other winners include KSHB for "Breaking News Coverage", WFTS for "Hard News", and KBZK for "Sports Reporting".

The E.W. Scripps Company (NASDAQ: SSP) has achieved a significant milestone in the journalism industry, winning five prestigious 2025 National Edward R. Murrow Awards. The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) announced the honors, recognizing Scripps News and four local television stations for their outstanding contributions to news broadcasting.

WTVR, Scripps' CBS station in Richmond, Virginia, was the standout performer, winning the "Overall Excellence" award in the small-market television category. This is the fifth National Murrow Award for WTVR in six years, highlighting the station's consistent excellence. The CBS6 team has previously won for "News Documentary" in 2024, "News Series" in 2023, "Sports Reporting" in 2022, and "Overall Excellence" in 2020 [1].

KSHB, Scripps' NBC station in Kansas City, Missouri, received recognition for its "Breaking News Coverage" reporting on the Chiefs Super Bowl rally in February 2024. The station's coverage of the subsequent shooting incident, which injured over 20 people, including children, was commended for its thoroughness and timeliness [1].

WFTS, Scripps' ABC station in Tampa, Florida, won the "Hard News" award for its investigation into a student with autism facing 30 years in prison for attacking a teacher's aide. The incident sparked a debate about the appropriate punishment for students with special needs [1].

KBZK, Scripps' CBS station in Bozeman, Montana, was honored for its "Sports Reporting" on "The Match," a feature about two high school wrestlers competing in the state tournament [1].

Scripps News, the national news group owned by Scripps, also received recognition for its "News Documentary" episode "In Real Life: Hidden War." The hour-long documentary used on-the-ground reporting and satellite imagery analysis to explore the complexities of the West Bank conflict. The documentary aired for seven seasons on Scripps News and has since been acquired by the nonprofit news and documentary organization "Evident," which shares the award [1].

Jeff Kiernan, Scripps vice president of local news, commented on the achievements, stating, "The work from these four stations reflects a deep connection to the communities they serve. Because our reporters live and work alongside their audiences, they're there for the moments of celebration and the moments of grief – bringing to light the issues that might otherwise go unheard, and telling them in ways that help communities understand, heal and bring people together" [1].

The 2025 National Murrow Award winners will be honored at a Gala in October in New York City. For more information, visit the RTDNA website [2].
