Samsung has once again pushed the boundaries of innovation with the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold7, Z Flip7, and Z Flip7 FE at the Galaxy Unpacked 2025 event. These devices mark a pivotal moment for foldable smartphones, blending cutting-edge AI, refined design, and robust security to cater to a new era of mobile experiences. Samsung's vision is to make foldables not just a niche luxury but an accessible, practical choice for a broader audience.
One of the biggest hurdles in foldable adoption has been bulk. Samsung has addressed this with the Galaxy Z Fold7, which weighs a mere 215 grams and measures 8.9 mm when folded and 4.2 mm when unfolded. This engineering feat, achieved through a restructured Armour Flex Hinge and
Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, makes the Fold7 feel more like a traditional smartphone when closed. Its 8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X main display transforms it into a tablet-like powerhouse when unfolded. The 6.5-inch cover screen with a new 21:9 aspect ratio enhances usability for quick tasks like typing or browsing without unfolding. The Galaxy Z Flip7 and its more affordable sibling, the Z Flip7 FE, take portability to new heights. The Flip7’s 4.1-inch Super AMOLED Flex Window, the largest ever on a Galaxy Z Flip, boasts edge-to-edge usability with 2,600 nits of peak brightness and a 120 Hz refresh rate, making it ideal for outdoor visibility and fluid interactions. At 6.5 mm unfolded and 13.7 mm folded, the Flip7 is slimmer yet houses a 4,300 mAh battery, the largest in the Flip series, offering up to 31 hours of video playback. The Flip7 FE, designed to democratise foldables, maintains a 6.7-inch main display and a 50MP FlexCam, balancing premium features with affordability at $899 compared to the Flip7’s $1,099 starting price.
What truly sets the Z Fold7 and Flip7 series apart is their integration of Galaxy AI, optimised for foldable form factors through One UI 8, built on Android 16. This is not just marketing fluff; One UI 8 introduces multimodal AI capabilities via Google’s Gemini Live, allowing users to interact through voice, text, or visuals seamlessly. For instance, screen-sharing with Gemini Live lets users display content like a chair and a room on the Fold7’s Multi-Window, asking the AI for design advice in real time.
The Fold7’s 200MP main camera, a first for the Galaxy Z series, captures four times the detail of its 50MP predecessor, enhanced by the AI-powered ProVisual Engine for vibrant low-light shots. Features like Photo Assist and upgraded Generative Edit with Suggest Erases make editing effortless, automatically detecting and removing distractions like passersby. The Flip7’s 50MP main camera and 12MP ultrawide flex camera also benefit from AI enhancements, ensuring high-quality selfies and videos in Flex Mode.
As AI becomes central to mobile experiences, Samsung is doubling down on security with One UI 8’s Knox Enhanced Encrypted Protection (KEEP). This feature creates app-specific encrypted storage, ensuring apps access only their data. Additionally, Samsung’s integration of post-quantum cryptography into Secure Wi-Fi addresses future threats, securing connections even on public networks. The Knox Matrix further enhances cross-device threat detection, making the Galaxy ecosystem a fortress for user data.
Samsung’s introduction of the Z Flip7 FE signals a strategic push to broaden the foldable market. Priced at $899, it offers premium features like the 50MP FlexCam and AI suite, powered by the efficient Exynos 2400 CPU, making foldables more accessible without sacrificing performance. Available in minimalist black and white, it appeals to younger demographics drawn to the clamshell’s distinctive style.
The Fold7, priced between £1,799 and £2,149, targets the ultra-premium segment, competing with rivals who have gained ground with thinner designs. Available in Blue Shadow, Silver Shadow, Jet Black, and
(online exclusive), it offers a 100-day trial and complimentary Samsung Care+ for peace of mind. The Flip7, in Blue Shadow, Jet Black, Coral Red, and Mint, starts at $1,099, with pre-orders live from July 9 and general availability on July 25.Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 and Flip7 series are not just iterative updates; they are a bold statement that foldables can be practical, powerful, and accessible. By combining sleek designs, AI-driven productivity, and future-ready security, Samsung is addressing past criticisms while setting a new benchmark. As foldables evolve from novelty to necessity, Samsung’s latest lineup proves they are not just keeping up but leading the charge.
