Sam Altman: OpenAI Is Aiming To Build 'Super-intelligence'

OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman wrote in his personal blog on January 6th that OpenAI is confident in building Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), and the company has begun to shift its focus towards superintelligence.

Altman also pointed out, "We love our current products, but we are here for the glorious future."

At present, today's artificial intelligence technology still has significant technical limitations, not only some obvious mistakes but also the training of models is very expensive.

However, Altman seems confident to overcome all of this and can solve it quickly. Altman said, "We're pretty confident that in the next few years, everyone will see what we see, and that the need to act with great care, while still maximizing broad benefit and empowerment, is so important."

Building Artificial General Intelligence

Building Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) has always been a major goal of OpenAI, even though AGI is still a vague term. OpenAI has its own definition of it, which is a highly autonomous system that performs better than humans in the most economically valuable work.

OpenAI and its close investment partner Microsoft have another definition for AGI, which is an artificial intelligence system that can generate at least $100 billion in profit. According to the previous agreement between the two companies, when OpenAI achieves this goal, Microsoft will no longer be able to obtain its technology.

In the latest blog, Altman did not explicitly state which definition of general artificial intelligence he was referring to, but the former seems most likely, because Altman wrote, "We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first AI agents 'join the workforce' and materially change the output of companies."

Altman also pointed out, "We continue to believe that iteratively putting great tools in the hands of people leads to great, broadly distributed outcomes."

"Superintelligence" Vision

Regarding superintelligence, Altman wrote in the article that OpenAI is beginning to shift its focus to true superintelligence, "With superintelligence, we can do anything else. Superintelligent tools could massively accelerate scientific discovery and innovation well beyond what we are capable of doing on our own, and in turn, massively increase abundance and prosperity."

Previously, OpenAI has also mentioned several times how to successfully transition to a world with superintelligence. For example, an article by OpenAI in December 2023, mentioned, that they believe that superintelligence can be developed "within the next decade" In September 2024, Altman pointed out that superintelligence may appear in a few thousand days, and its arrival will be stronger than people imagine.

As OpenAI shifts its focus to what it believes to be superintelligence, people hope that the company will invest enough resources to ensure the safe operation of superintelligence systems.

But safe operation seems to be the biggest problem right now, as humans seem to have no way to manipulate or control a potential super-intelligent artificial intelligence system to prevent it from getting out of control. Even OpenAI, which proposed this idea, has no answer.
