SailPoint Inc.'s latest report, "Horizons of Identity Security 2025-2026," underscores the transformative role of identity security in enhancing enterprise agility and AI capabilities. The report reveals a widening gap in identity maturity among organizations, emphasizing the critical importance of AI and advanced identity practices for achieving higher ROI and reducing risks.
According to the report, organizations adopting AI-enabled identity security are four times more likely to leverage advanced capabilities. This trend is evident in the deployment of tools such as identity threat detection and response (ITDR), adaptive authentication, and governance for AI agents and bots. Advanced identity security practices offer significant financial benefits, enabling higher cost savings and productivity gains.
The report highlights that nearly two-thirds (63%) of organizations remain stuck in basic levels of identity maturity, relying heavily on manual processes. Only a small group has advanced into higher maturity stages, with just 10% reaching levels where identity transforms into a growth platform. This disparity underscores the need for organizations to prioritize advanced capabilities and deployment best practices, such as data cleanup before migration and automated app onboarding.
Organizations that succeed in advancing their identity security maturity focus on data cleanup before migration, making them 1.6 times more likely to scale effectively. They also standardize app onboarding, apply automated lifecycle workflows, strengthen identity data synchronization, and unify fragmented identity data. These practices clear the path for advanced capabilities like ITDR, adaptive authentication, and AI-agent governance.
The payoff for those that advance to more mature Horizons is undeniable. Identity delivers the highest ROI of any security investment, consistently outpacing endpoint, network, and compliance tools. Enterprises that treat identity as a strategic enabler report typical ROI multiples of up to 10x, reducing risk, driving revenue, and enabling AI safely.
The report is based on a survey of 375 IAM decision-makers across Americas, Europe, and Asia, and it groups organizations into five horizons of identity maturity based on strategy, technology, operating model, and talent. The findings underscore the need for organizations to prioritize advanced identity security practices to stay competitive in an increasingly complex and AI-driven landscape.
