A significant recall has been announced for approximately 780,000 Ryobi pressure washers sold across the United States and Canada, owing to safety concerns stemming from capacitors that can overheat and explode. These incidents risk causing parts to become dangerously airborne, posing severe injury threats to both users and bystanders. The recall, mandated by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), affects Ryobi models RY142300 and RY142711VNM.
The pressure washers are equipped with capacitors that, under certain conditions, may overheat and rupture, resulting in the forceful ejection of components. This defect has already led to 135 reports of overheating, of which 41 resulted in explosions. Consequently, there have been 32 reported injuries, including fractures and other trauma to fingers, hands, faces, and eyes. These incidents have primarily occurred in the United States, with no additional incidents reported in Canada, as verified by Health Canada.
Consumers who have purchased these pressure washers are strongly advised to cease usage immediately. Ryobi is offering free repair kits that include replacement capacitors and instructions for installation. These kits will be provided without the need for proof of purchase. Detailed information on acquiring the repair kits can be found on Ryobi’s recall webpage.
The affected products were sold through major retailers such as
and Direct Tools Factory Outlet, and were available for purchase both in physical stores and online from July 2017 to June 2024. The pressures washers were priced between $300 and $400. Approximately 764,000 units were sold in the United States, with an additional 16,000 units distributed in Canada. The recall underscores the importance of safety in consumer products, with regulators swiftly acting upon consumer reports to mitigate injury risks. The coordinated efforts between the CPSC and Health Canada illustrate a robust framework for cross-border recall actions, ensuring consumer safety remains paramount.
TTI Outdoor Power Equipment, the producer of the Ryobi washers, is engaged in managing this recall to address the serious injury risk posed by the defective capacitors. Consumers impacted by this recall can directly contact the company via their customer service number for additional support or visit the Ryobi recall website for further guidance.
This recall follows previous product alerts from TTI Outdoor Power Equipment concerning other Ryobi-branded products, emphasizing the company's ongoing efforts to address potential safety hazards proactively. Such measures not only seek to alleviate customer concerns but also reinforce the company's commitment to product safety and consumer welfare.
As this situation develops, analysts predict that consumer confidence in Ryobi products may be resilient, particularly given the company's responsive recall efforts and the provision of free repairs. However, the implications of such recalls could influence future corporate strategies and quality control measures to prevent similar occurrences.
