Russian Authorities Arrest 26-Year-Old in $3.2 Million Crypto Mining Scam

Russian authorities have made a significant arrest in connection with a large-scale cryptocurrency mining scam. A 26-year-old individual was apprehended for his alleged involvement in a scheme that defrauded 100 victims out of a total of 270 million rubles, equivalent to approximately $3.2 million. The scam involved the suspect and two accomplices who claimed to operate a "mining hotel," promising passive income to those who handed over their ASIC mining machines.

The investigation began in February when a local resident reported to the police that he had given his mining equipment to the suspects under the false pretense of earning passive income. The suspects are accused of selling the equipment they received and misappropriating funds intended for the purchase of additional mining machines.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Irkutsk Region has opened a criminal case against the suspect for fraud and is continuing to question the victims. The other members of the mining group remain at large and are being sought by authorities.

This incident is not an isolated case. In 2022, a similar scam occurred where two individuals stole 2 million rubles by offering a fake mining hosting scheme to local citizens. The recurrence of such fraudulent activities highlights the need for increased vigilance and regulatory oversight in the cryptocurrency mining sector.
