Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov announced that the second round of talks between Russia and Ukraine will take place on June 2 in Istanbul. The Russian delegation, led by Presidential Aide Vladimir Medinsky, is prepared to submit a memorandum to the Ukrainian delegation during the negotiations and provide necessary explanations. Lavrov expressed hope that the talks would lead to a genuine push for peace.
The first round of direct talks between Russian and Ukrainian representatives took place on March 16 in Istanbul. This meeting, chaired by Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, lasted nearly two hours and marked the first face-to-face discussion between the two sides since the escalation of the Ukraine crisis over three years ago. During this initial meeting, both sides agreed to exchange 1000 prisoners of war and expressed a willingness to continue negotiations.
Lavrov's announcement comes as Russia has completed the drafting of a memorandum aimed at achieving peace. Medinsky's delegation will hand over this document to the Ukrainian side and offer the necessary clarifications. The memorandum outlines Russia's stance on resolving the
causes of the Ukraine crisis, reflecting the country's commitment to finding a diplomatic solution.Following Lavrov's statement, it was reported that he had a telephone conversation with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, during which they discussed the Ukraine issue. Cavusoglu stated that Turkey is fully prepared to host the Russian-Ukrainian talks in Istanbul on June 2, reiterating the country's role as a mediator in the conflict. The Turkish Foreign Minister is scheduled to visit Ukraine from May 29 to 30, although the specific details and agenda of this visit have not been disclosed. This visit is seen as a preparatory step ahead of the upcoming negotiations, underscoring Turkey's role as a mediator in the conflict.
The upcoming talks in Istanbul are crucial as they follow a period of heightened tensions and represent a significant effort to de-escalate the situation through diplomatic means. The negotiations are expected to focus on key issues such as prisoner exchanges, ceasefire agreements, and potential steps towards a lasting peace. The success of these talks could pave the way for further diplomatic efforts and contribute to the stabilization of the region.
