Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas, renowned as the largest cruise ship in the world, experienced an unfortunate incident on Thursday, August 7. The accident occurred when an acrylic glass panel within one of the vessel's water slides unexpectedly broke, injuring an adult guest. The injured individual, whose identity remains confidential, is said to be in stable condition following medical treatment provided by the ship's medical team.
The ship, currently docked at the Costa Maya Cruise Port in Mahahual, Quintana Roo, Mexico, was amid a voyage when the incident took place. As a result of the accident, the water slide has been shut down for the remainder of the cruise while an investigation is conducted to determine the cause of the failure. The slide, reported to be in the Category 6 water park, forms part of what is billed as the largest waterpark at sea, featuring six water slides.
Witness accounts relay dramatic scenes as water gushed from the broken slide area, leading to urgent calls for staff to halt the attraction. Video footage captured by passengers, such as Jim Muldoon, highlights the moments of chaos when the slide malfunctioned, with passengers calling desperately for the slide to be stopped to prevent further injuries.
This incident marks a significant disruption on a ship that only commenced operation in January 2024 and can host nearly 10,000 guests at full capacity. The Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas had recently completed its maiden voyage from Miami, further cementing its reputation as a juggernaut in the cruising industry.
Despite the serious circumstances, Royal Caribbean has emphasized its immediate response to the injury, ensuring the affected guest received necessary medical attention. The company reassures that the safety and trust of its guests remain a top priority.
The incident occurred a mere two weeks after a separate, unrelated altercation aboard the same vessel, involving two crew members, which resulted in one fatality. However, Royal Caribbean has clarified that the two incidents are entirely unconnected.
The Icon of the Seas is scheduled to return to its base at PortMiami by Saturday following the conclusion of this sailing. An in-depth investigation is currently underway to ascertain the specifics of the acrylic glass failure and to implement any necessary measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Pending the investigation's outcome, operations of the affected slide remain suspended.
Royal Caribbean has pledged transparency and diligence in its handling of this incident, with passenger safety remaining at the forefront of its operational commitments. Cruise passengers on future voyages with the line can expect enhanced safety checks and continued attention to overall guest experiences onboard their fleet.
