Roswell Becomes First US City to Establish Bitcoin Reserve
Roswell, New Mexico, renowned for the alleged UFO incident in 1947, has made history by becoming the first city in the United States to establish a Bitcoin reserve. This groundbreaking move was initially announced by a pseudonymous cryptocurrency YouTuber, Crypto Rover, on April 30, 2025.
The Roswell Strategic Bitcoin Reserve has received its initial donation of 0.3050233 BTC, valued at approximately $2,906 at the time of receipt. The city's plan is to hold these reserves for a minimum of 10 years, after which the proceeds will be used to reduce or eliminate the water bills for senior citizens in Roswell. Additionally, once the reserve's value exceeds $1 million, up to 21% of its value can be utilized every five years for disaster relief, provided it receives unanimous approval from the Roswell City Council.
This initiative underscores Roswell's commitment to leveraging innovative financial strategies to support its community. By locking the reserve for a decade, the city ensures long-term financial stability and mitigates the risks associated with Bitcoin's volatility. The funds, sourced exclusively from donations and sponsorships, will not expose the city to financial risks typically associated with cryptocurrency investments.
Despite the challenges faced by Bitcoin in 2025, the cryptocurrency has demonstrated resilience and price movements independent of the stock market. This independence could be beneficial for Roswell, as it ensures that the city's financial strategy is not overly influenced by broader market fluctuations. The city's decision to adopt Bitcoin as part of its financial reserves reflects a forward-thinking approach to municipal finance, potentially setting a precedent for other cities to follow.
