The Vilas County Lakes and Rivers Association has recognized two families for their outstanding commitment to sustainable lakefront property management through its Blue Heron Stewardship Award. The recipients include Brian and Jean Ciske of Broken Bow Lake and Fred and Stephanie Gruber of Irving Lake. These families were selected based on their efforts to maintain natural shorelines and wetlands, which contribute to the ecological health of their local lakes. The Ciske property, in particular, is noted for its natural shoreline with a bog mat that includes pitcher plants and native vegetation, while the Gruber property features a wetland area with wild calla lilies and sedges. Both properties serve as habitats for wildlife, including swans, and are models for responsible lakefront management.

The Blue Heron Stewardship Award is a key initiative by the Vilas County Lakes and Rivers Association to encourage sustainable development and environmental stewardship among lakefront property owners. The evaluation process includes criteria such as driveway and parking areas, structures and septic systems, yard and recreation areas, shoreline conditions, and overall lot assessment. These criteria are designed to assess the overall impact of a property on lake health, promoting practices that reduce environmental degradation and support biodiversity. The award highlights the importance of maintaining natural shorelines and using eco-friendly practices in property management.
In addition to recognizing individual property owners, the award aims to inspire others in the community to adopt similar conservation strategies. By showcasing best practices in environmental stewardship, the Vilas County Lakes and Rivers Association is fostering a culture of sustainability and responsible land use. Other local events, such as the Chicken Soup Cluck Off and DNR career fairs, further support environmental efforts in the region. These initiatives collectively reflect a growing awareness of the importance of protecting natural resources and promoting long-term ecological balance in lake communities.
