India introduces new labelling norms for appliances such as ACs, refrigerators, TVs, and solar PV modules, requiring labels to include energy consumption, brand details, country of origin, star rating, and QR code for traceability. The aim is to eliminate misleading claims and promote energy-efficient purchases. The Ministry of Power is also developing a program to help households replace old ACs with newer, more energy-efficient alternatives.
India has introduced new labelling norms for a range of appliances, including air-conditioners (ACs), refrigerators, televisions, and solar photovoltaic (PV) modules. The changes aim to enhance consumer awareness and promote energy-efficient purchases. The new regulations, outlined in the 'Bureau of Energy Efficiency (Appliance Labelling) Regulations, 2025' [1], will require labels to include detailed product information such as energy consumption, brand details, country of origin, star rating, and a QR code for traceability. These labels will provide consumers with comprehensive information to make informed choices. The labels will specify the product's country of origin, energy consumption in easy-to-understand language, a unique serial number, and a QR code. The new regulations also aim to address issues of misleading claims on energy efficiency by providing a more transparent and detailed labelling system.
In addition to the labelling changes, the Ministry of Power is developing a program to encourage households to replace old ACs with newer, more energy-efficient models. The plan, similar to the successful Ujala scheme for LED bulbs, is expected to offer incentives such as manufacturer exchange discounts, electricity bill rebates, and a buyback option for old units. The scheme is still in the drafting phase but is expected to target metro cities initially, with a potential rollout later this year [2].
The new labelling norms and the AC replacement program are part of India's broader strategy to improve energy efficiency and reduce the strain on the national power grid. By encouraging consumers to choose energy-efficient appliances, these initiatives aim to lower electricity consumption and promote sustainable practices.
