Authorities in Reno, Nevada, are investigating a shooting outside the Grand Sierra Resort that resulted in three fatalities and left several others injured early Monday morning. The incident prompted a swift response from law enforcement, with police on the scene within minutes of the initial report, according to Reno Police Chief Kathryn Nance.
The suspect, an adult male whose identity has not yet been disclosed, reportedly began firing in the resort's valet parking area at approximately 7:25 a.m. Witness accounts describe a chaotic scene as gunshots rang out, prompting guests to seek cover. One person was pronounced dead at the scene, while four others were transported to a local hospital. Another victim later succumbed to injuries at the hospital, while two remain in critical condition. A fifth victim has been treated and released.
Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth confirmed that the suspect, armed with multiple gun magazines, encountered a malfunctioning firearm shortly after initiating the attack but managed to resolve the issue and fire multiple rounds at victims. Following the initial shooting, the gunman was involved in a shootout with a resort security guard before fleeing. During his escape, he shot and killed another person driving through the parking lot.
Law enforcement officers from the Reno Police Department arrived on the northwest side of the casino's parking area within minutes. Upon arrival, they were met with gunfire from the suspect, who hit a patrol car, leading to an officer-involved shooting where multiple officers fired their weapons. The suspect was struck and is currently hospitalized in critical condition.
Authorities have emphasized that there is no known connection between the victims and the suspect, and the motive remains unclear. As a precaution, the northwest section of the parking lot has been closed off as investigations continue, led by the Sparks Police Department due to Reno's protocol involving officer shootings.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve expressed her condolences and praised the rapid and courageous response from first responders. She reiterated the community's resilience in the face of violent acts, stressing the importance of safety in public spaces. The Grand Sierra Resort, which remains fully operational, thanked law enforcement for their swift action and assured there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo also acknowledged the incident, offering prayers for those impacted and commending the bravery of first responders. The governor assured that state authorities are monitoring the situation closely and are ready to provide assistance.
The investigation continues, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward. As the community grapples with the repercussions of the shooting, efforts to understand the suspect's motivations and connections (if any) remain a priority for law enforcement agencies involved.
