Reddit Sues Anthropic Over Alleged 100,000 Data Scrapes

Reddit has initiated legal action against Anthropic, an artificial intelligence company, alleging that Anthropic's bots accessed Reddit's data over 100,000 times since July 2024, despite Anthropic's claims that it had ceased such activities. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco superior court, accuses Anthropic of "scraping" user comments to train its AI chatbot, Claude.
contends that Anthropic's actions have unjustly enriched the AI company at Reddit's expense and that Anthropic declined to enter into a licensing agreement for the data.Reddit's chief legal officer, Ben Lee, emphasized that Anthropic's "commercial exploitation" of Reddit content could be worth billions of dollars. Lee highlighted the unique value of Reddit's human discussions, which span nearly 20 years and cover a vast array of topics. These conversations, according to Lee, are central to training language models like Claude. Reddit has previously inked a deal with Google to provide AI training data, reportedly worth about $60 million a year.
This is not the first time Anthropic has faced legal action over alleged copyright infringement. In August, three authors filed a class-action lawsuit against Anthropic, claiming the company built a multibillion-dollar business by stealing hundreds of thousands of copyrighted books. Additionally, in October 2023, Universal Music sued Anthropic over the "systematic and widespread infringement of their copyrighted song lyrics."
The lawsuit against Anthropic is part of a growing trend of publishers and content creators taking legal action against AI companies for alleged copyright infringement. Other notable cases include lawsuits against OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, by The New York Times, a group of authors including George R.R. Martin, and publishers of newspapers such as The New York Daily News and The Chicago Tribune. A group of publishers, including Condé Nast and Vox Media, has also sued AI company Cohere for infringement.
Reddit's lawsuit against Anthropic underscores the ongoing debate over data usage and compensation in the AI industry. As AI companies continue to develop advanced language models, the legal and ethical implications of data scraping and unauthorized use of content remain a contentious issue. The outcome of this lawsuit could set a precedent for future cases involving AI companies and content creators. The legal battle highlights the tension between the rapid advancement of AI technology and the need to protect intellectual property and ensure fair compensation for content creators. The resolution of this case will likely have significant implications for the AI industry and the broader digital landscape.
