Reddit's Slide, Gap's Surge: A Tale of Two Stocks

Reddit Inc (RDDT) and Gap Inc (GAP) both reported earnings recently, but the market's reaction to their results couldn't be more different. While Reddit's stock slid despite a strong earnings report, Gap's shares surged on the back of robust sales and a rosy outlook. Let's delve into the factors driving these contrasting performances and explore what they mean for investors.

Reddit's stock plummeted 6.2% in premarket trading on Monday, despite closing 16% higher the previous day. The social media platform posted a 68% increase in revenue and a net profit of $29.9 million, surpassing analyst expectations. However, the stock's distance from its 100-day moving average and a relative strength index (RSI) of 79.18 suggested overbought conditions, triggering selling opportunities. Moreover, a report by Bloomberg that Advance Magazine Publishers, a significant shareholder, planned to sell up to $1.2 billion of its stake in Reddit may have dampened investor enthusiasm.

In stark contrast, Gap's stock soared 16% in after-hours trading following its Q3 earnings release. The retailer reported a 2% increase in net sales to $3.83 billion, with Old Navy, Gap, Banana Republic, and Athleta all posting sales growth. Athleta, in particular, saw a 5% increase in comparable sales, marking its return to positive territory. Gap's ability to grow sales and expand market share, despite challenges like unseasonably warm weather and hurricanes, boosted investor confidence in the company's turnaround strategy.

Analysts' bullish ratings and price targets also played a significant role in Gap's stock surge. Before the earnings release, a majority of analysts tracked by Visible Alpha had a buy rating for Gap's stock. The consensus price target was $27, representing a more than 25% premium to Monday's closing price. This optimism was justified as Gap reported stronger-than-expected results, with net sales up 2% and operating income margin expanding by 270 basis points. The company also raised its full-year outlook, leading to a 16% surge in its stock price in after-hours trading.

In conclusion, while Reddit's strong earnings report failed to impress investors due to overbought conditions and potential selling pressure from a key shareholder, Gap's robust sales and positive outlook drove its stock to new heights. Investors should closely monitor these companies' progress and adapt their strategies accordingly, as market dynamics and investor sentiment can change quickly. By staying informed and maintaining a balanced approach, investors can position themselves to capitalize on both growth opportunities and defensive plays.

As the author's core investment values emphasize, a balanced and analytical approach to investing is crucial in navigating the complexities of today's markets. By considering multiple perspectives and factors, investors can make more informed decisions and better manage risk.

$RDDT Yesterday was my lucky day. I bought puts at $143, and then it spiked to $160, making them disappear. But I managed to sell them today when they briefly touched $143 before going up again. This stock is overvalued, but I'm not even considering competing with it because it might hit $200 before anything else.

$RDDT I already have a significantly cheaper position, but I'm open to adding more opportunities if they present themselves.

$RDDT Some major shareholders sold, and bears are convinced it's not profit taking. 🤣🤣🤣 Man, I remember having similar thoughts a few years back after just a couple of trades and not fully grasping the market...

Why is it that $RDDT always takes out loans against their collateral without any major news, yet when they recently did it while their stock was at an all-time high, it made headlines? Additionally, if they're securing a loan, it implies they don't see much risk in their current situation.

$RDDT Hahahaha! The loan against the 1.2 billion was clearly a short-squeeze tactic. There's no share sale planned; instead, shares are being used as collateral. Next week, we'll resume our efforts to crush the shorts. For the shorts, go big or go home, please. Thanks a lot.

List of stocks I'm watching (11/22) I've got an extensive background in prop trading and this is my daily stock watchlist: I might end up buying or selling any of the stocks on this list or even those not listed here! I mainly invest in a few well-known MAG 7 stocks and market indices for long-term gains. If you visit Old Reddit, remember to click “Show Images” at the top to check out the charts. Any positions I have mentioned aren't recommendations, I strictly follow the subreddit rules to disclose my positions. I use IBKR TWS for my trading platform and charts. I'm targeting potentially strong stocks for day trading; I don't have any personal opinion about them as investments. This means the potential of the stock moving today is what makes it interesting, not the business, long-term prospects, or the people involved. PLEASE ask specific questions and PLEASE don't ask about earnings because I usually don't take positions before earnings announcements. Questions like “Thoughts on _____?” or “Why isn't ___ on the watchlist?” or something answered already will be ignored unless you provide more details and your own opinion. If you ask a question and then delete it after I've answered it, I will block you- deleting your question hurts the discussion. I won't be answering any questions about stocks I'm still long or short on beyond what I've updated. Mainly earnings and MSTR today. News: The SEC is probing JP Morgan's connections to an Iranian Oil Kingpin's Hedge Fund MSTR - I'm keeping an eye on the $400 level. I'm currently short, but I will cover if "the asset" reaches $100K or if we hit $420. GAP - They've raised their FY24 outlook for sales and operating income growth. EPS came in at .72 vs .58 expected. Revenue was $3.83B vs $3.81B expected. They're attributing the strength to holiday sales. SATS - DirectTV has confirmed that they are not acquiring SATS Video Distribution Business. REPL - They've received Breakthrough Therapy Designation for the treatment of advanced melanoma. ESTC - EPS was .59 vs .38 expected. Revenue was $365M vs $352M expected. Sales were up 18% YoY.

$RDDT is actually a loan and not a sale.

Athleta's 5% sales boost is a solid win, but let's see if they keep it up. Gap's turnaround is promising, but fashion trends can shift quick. 🤔
