Reddit Dives 21% After Earnings: Investors Dodge Google's "Choppy" Trap

Reddit beat estimates, but investors focused on Google dependency
After Big Tech earnings already rattled sentiment, RedditRDDT-- delivered a confusing signal. The company beat quarterly profit and revenue estimates, with Q2 earnings at $1.25 a share on $805 million of revenue, yet the stock still fell sharply after the report. That looks less like a fundamentals collapse than a rapid repricing of investor confidence.
The issue was the narrative, not the quarter
During an earnings week when the S&P 500's second-quarter earnings growth was still estimated at 23.2%, Reddit's problem was more about perception than accounting. Management said search referrals were choppy and traffic was more volatile later in the quarter. Investors let that warning overshadow strong operating results.
Reddit also reported 130.3 million average daily active uniques and third-quarter revenue guidance above expectations. But after a roughly 40% year-to-date drawdown, the stock is now trading as if the Google-dependency narrative matters more than current execution.
Reddit's Q2 results were strong even if the stock reaction was not
Execution remained solid
Reddit's second quarter was broadly impressive on the numbers that matter. Revenue rose 61% to $805 million, ahead of expectations by roughly $75 million. Net income reached $253 million, while Adj. EBITDA of $343 million and operating cash flow of $262 million show the growth was translating into profitability and cash generation.
The user base kept expanding too. Reddit reported 130.3 million DAUs and 514.6 million WAUs, and ad revenue increased 64% year-over-year for an eighth straight quarter of more than 60% revenue growth. That is the profile of a business still executing well, not one losing control.
Why investors fixated on one warning
What changed was the story investors chose to emphasize. After a week of Big Tech earnings rattling sentiment, Reddit's comment that search referrals were choppy became the dominant frame. Management gave skeptics a simple risk to focus on: dependence on Google.
That does not make the concern trivial. But it does help explain the market's reaction. Bulls saw a temporary traffic dip. Bears saw evidence of a broader exposure problem. The stock move suggests the bearish interpretation won the day.
The deeper debate: vulnerability or defensibility?
Management's response mattered because it reframed the issue. Huffman said Reddit is not building for drive-by traffic and is instead building a daily destination. If that view proves correct, loyal engagement may matter more than unpredictable referral spikes.
The AI question is where the debate remains most unresolved. Reddit has already rolled out Reddit Answers in nine countries, but the long-term monetization path for AI-driven search features is still unclear. Investors are left weighing two risks at once: exposure to Google referral changes, and the possibility that new AI products do not monetize cleanly for the platform.
What would make this selloff useful rather than dangerous
After a 40% value loss since the start of the year, the setup changes. A drop like this becomes more interesting only if the market starts pricing what is actually happening next, not just what it fears Google or AI might do later.
The next test is delivery
The clean near-term test is execution. Management is aiming for $860 million to $870 million in next-quarter revenue. If Reddit delivers that range, it weakens the easiest bearish argument that the prior quarter was an anomaly.
Bears still have a case, but it has to get stronger, not simpler. Their argument matters most if future data show that heavy reliance on Google for new sign-ups is turning into a real monetization problem. Management has already pushed back with the daily-destination framing, arguing that loyal engagement can matter more than volatile referral traffic.
What investors should watch next
- Whether search-referral volatility fades or persists
- Whether ad growth and cash generation stay strong
- Whether new AI products improve engagement without weakening monetization
If those signals hold up, the selloff may start to look like a positioning window. If they weaken, the market's caution may prove justified.
