A graphite mine in Quebec has been added to the federal government's list of major projects in the national interest. The Nouveau Monde Graphite's Matawinie Mine will produce 106,000 tonnes of graphite concentrate per year and supply Canada and allies with a critical mineral for EV batteries, energy storage, and defense. The mine has an Indigenous agreement and is expected to start construction in 2026 with production in 2028. Some environmental groups oppose the project, citing concerns about water quality and defense applications.
