Qualcomm (QCOM.US) unveils new AI chip at the "Tech Spring Festival" with PC starting at $600.
Qualcomm (QCOM.US) has launched a new chip aimed at powering personal computers (PCs) that can run the latest artificial intelligence (AI) software, and the new chip-based PCs are expected to be priced as low as $600. The Snapdragon X platform, unveiled by Qualcomm at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES2025), is composed of an 8-core Oryon central processor, graphics components, and a dedicated AI chip that will run Microsoft's (MSFT.US) Copilot+ software. Qualcomm also said that PC manufacturers such as Dell (DELL.US) will launch laptops based on the new product "in early 2025".Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon has been pushing the company into the PC market to reduce its reliance on the smartphone chip market, where it has long dominated the high-end market.Qualcomm has won widespread support from PC manufacturers and Microsoft, and the devices launched last year have been well received. But so far, the company has not made a major dent in the market share of PC chip giants Intel and AMD.In addition to new laptops, Qualcomm's customers will also offer new small desktop PCs based on the Snapdragon X. Qualcomm also offers a range of more powerful and expensive components - Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus.A key element of Qualcomm's promotion is that devices using its chips can extend battery life. The company says its chips have been designed for small batteries, making them more efficient than the components offered by its established rivals.Earlier on Monday, Intel released new chips that it said could extend battery life. Qualcomm disputed this, saying its chips can run at full power even when a laptop is unplugged, while machines running rival processors must slow down.Qualcomm's new chip is designed to power PCs that can run the latest artificial intelligence software, and the new chip-based PCs are expected to be priced as low as $600.
