Qualcomm's recent announcement at MWC 2025 of the X85 5G modem and RF technology has sparked significant interest. This eighth-generation 5G modem is designed to enhance connectivity for a new generation of AI applications, offering faster data speeds, improved network stability, and reduced congestion in high-density environments. The X85 supports 5G Advanced technology and is applicable to a wide range of devices, including Android smartphones, PCs, fixed wireless access (FWA), automotive systems, and augmented reality (XR) devices.
Durga Malladi, Qualcomm's senior vice president and general manager of technology planning and edge solutions, highlighted that the X85 is the company's most advanced modem and antenna system, designed to elevate the 5G connectivity experience. He emphasized that this technology will bring higher data speeds, better energy efficiency, and more stable connections to flagship Android smartphones. As qualcomm celebrates its 40th anniversary and the integration of AI into more devices, the launch of the X85 marks a significant step in the company's ongoing development of AI and wireless connectivity technologies.
Qualcomm is collaborating with global telecom companies, infrastructure suppliers, standards organizations, and regulatory bodies to commercialize the X85 and has already secured support from multiple partners. In addition to the X85, Qualcomm introduced the X82 5G modem and RF technology, designed for mainstream mobile broadband applications, supporting gigabit-level download and upload speeds. Reference designs based on the X85 and X82 for M.2 and LGA are also available, applicable to fixed wireless access, mobile broadband, PCs, and consumer devices, accelerating industry development. Customer testing for the X85 and X82 has begun, with the first commercial devices expected to launch in the second half of this year.
