Doha, Qatar: Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has signed a strategic agreement with QatarEnergy, Qatar Electricity & Water Company (QEWC), and Sumitomo Corporation (representing a consortium with Luluah Sky Energy Holding Ltd) to construct the Ras Abu Fontas Power & Water Facility. This project aims to enhance the country's electricity and water production, meeting the growing demand driven by rapid population and economic growth.

The facility, with a capacity of 2400 MW of electricity and 110 MGD of water, is expected to provide about 23% of Qatar's total power and 20% of its water production. The construction is set to cost 13.5 billion Qatari Riyals and is scheduled to reach full operations by June 1, 2029. The project is a significant step towards achieving the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy 2024-2030.

The agreement includes a three-phase commissioning plan. The first phase will bring 836 MW of power online by April 25, 2028, followed by the final water date of 110 MGD on August 1, 2028. The target full operations date is June 1, 2029, with total power capacity reaching 2400 MW.

The project's objectives include enhancing water and energy security, reducing environmental impact, promoting innovation, and supporting economic development. It reflects Qatar's commitment to developing a modern, sustainable energy infrastructure and aligning with global sustainability goals.

The signing ceremony was attended by key officials, including HE Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, and HE Abdulla Bin Ali Al-Theyab, President of Kahramaa. The agreement underscores the collaborative efforts of QatarEnergy, Kahramaa, QEWC, and Sumitomo Corporation in ensuring reliable and sustainable resources for the nation.
