Russian President Vladimir Putin said the era of liberal globalization is obsolete and that the future belongs to rapidly growing emerging markets, which should increase the use of their national currencies for trade. Putin spoke via video link to the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro due to a warrant from the International Criminal Court alleging he is responsible for war crimes in Ukraine. Moscou says the warrant is unfounded and without sense. The BRICS group, originally conceived by Goldman Sachs as an idea to describe the growing economic power of China and other large emerging markets, now represents 45% of the world's population. Putin also urged BRICS countries to intensify cooperation in a series of areas, including natural resources, logistics, commerce, and finance.
