Punchbowl reporter on X: At the moment, there are no plans for a House GOP meeting tonight
The Senate is nearing a deal on President Donald Trump's massive tax and immigration bill, according to reports from the Washington Post. Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota) expressed optimism that Republicans are close to securing the final vote needed to pass the legislation, which includes extending tax cuts, immigration reforms, and spending cuts on social benefit programs.
Negotiations have been ongoing with Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), who has been a holdout on the bill. Thune and other Republican leaders have been huddling with Murkowski and reviewing paperwork to address her concerns. If Murkowski can be convinced to vote in favor of the bill, Thune will have the 50 votes needed to pass it, with Vice President JD Vance breaking the tie.
Meanwhile, Trump is visiting a new temporary immigration detention center in Florida's Everglades, known as "Alligator Alcatraz." He has invited the U.S. pilots involved in the mission to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities to visit the White House.
The bill, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, would extend tax cuts passed in 2017, enact campaign promises such as no tax on tips, spend hundreds of billions of dollars on immigration enforcement and defense, and slash spending on social benefit programs. Passage in the Senate would send the legislation back to the House for further consideration ahead of the July 4 deadline that Trump imposed.
