Publicly traded companies now hold a combined total of 1,000,632 bitcoins (BTC-USD), valued at around $110 billion, according to BTC Treasuries data [1]. The surge in corporate Bitcoin holdings has been led by Strategy (MSTR), which accounts for nearly 63.6% of the total with 636,505 BTC. This significant milestone underscores the growing acceptance of Bitcoin as a reserve asset by major corporations.
Strategy, helmed by Michael Saylor, began accumulating Bitcoin in August 2020 and has since become the largest corporate holder. The company's strategy has inspired a new wave of adopters, including XXI, which has amassed 43,514 BTC, and Bitcoin Standard Treasury, which holds 30,021 BTC [1]. Other notable players include crypto exchange Bullish (24,000 BTC), Metaplanet (20,000 BTC), and publicly listed names like Riot Platforms, Trump Media & Technology Group, CleanSpark, and Coinbase.
The rapid accumulation of Bitcoin by public companies has fueled speculation around a potential supply shock. With only 5.2% of Bitcoin’s fixed 21 million supply left to be mined, continued corporate demand could drive prices even higher [1]. Bitcoin hit an all-time high of $124,450 last month, a move many attributed to ETF inflows and balance sheet buys.
Some firms are aiming much higher. Japan’s Metaplanet and U.S.-based Semler Scientific have set targets of 210,000 BTC and 105,000 BTC by 2027—ten to twenty times their current holdings [1]. Despite the rise in public company holdings, they trail behind crypto exchanges and ETFs, which collectively hold 1.62 million BTC [2].
The trend of corporate Bitcoin treasuries is growing globally. Outside the US, 120 public companies now hold Bitcoin, with Canada, the UK, Hong Kong, Mexico, South Africa, and Bahrain among the countries where corporate BTC ownership is expanding [1]. However, skepticism around the sustainability of the Bitcoin treasury trend is growing, with some experts questioning the longevity of the strategy as the market matures [1].
