PTC has introduced model-based definition (MBD) capabilities within its Onshape CAD and PDM platform. This is the first MBD offering within a cloud-native CAD and PDM solution, enabling better collaboration between engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing teams. PTC and Aura Aero will preview cloud-native MBD in Onshape at the Paris Air Show. MBD allows for a complete digital definition of a product by embedding product manufacturing information directly into the 3D CAD model.

PTC Inc. (NASDAQ: PTC) has announced a significant advancement in its Onshape platform with the introduction of model-based definition (MBD) capabilities. This is the first MBD offering within a cloud-native CAD and PDM solution, designed to enhance collaboration among engineering, supply chain, and manufacturing teams. The new feature allows for a complete digital definition of a product by embedding all relevant manufacturing information directly into the 3D CAD model.

The cloud-native MBD in Onshape enables engineering teams to include dimensions, tolerances, annotations, surface finishes, material specifications, and more within the 3D model itself. This removes the need for separate 2D drawings, reducing potential miscommunication and delays. The information is instantly accessible to all stakeholders, regardless of their location, thanks to the cloud-native architecture of Onshape.

PTC will demonstrate these capabilities at the Paris Air Show, June 16-19, with Aura Aero, a leading player in sustainable aviation. Aura Aero will showcase how these MBD features can accelerate the path from concept to production, including the ability to certify aircraft digitally.

"Even with the widespread adoption of 3D CAD, most manufacturing teams still rely on 2D drawings to communicate critical dimensions, tolerances, and annotations," said David Katzman, General Manager of Onshape and Arena, PTC. "Our new MBD capabilities remove the need to interpret 2D drawings by embedding PMI directly into the 3D model. This will enable teams to work faster, with greater clarity and fewer errors, while allowing a full digital end-to-end process."

The Onshape platform, which is the only cloud-native CAD and PDM solution in the industry, is expected to make MBD practical and scalable for real-world use. The new capabilities are currently in an early visibility program with select customers and are expected to be generally available by late 2025.
