The U.S. Commerce Department has proposed a steep increase on existing duties on Canadian softwood lumber imports, a move that could significantly impact the Canadian lumber industry and U.S. consumers. The proposed duties, which would increase the current average of 14.4 percent to 20 percent, are expected to further shrink Canada's market share in the U.S. lumber market and make Canadian lumber less competitive with domestic producers.
