The United States President has criticized the trade and tariff relationship between the United States and India, describing it as a "one-sided disaster" that has persisted for decades. In a post on the social media platform TruthSocial, the President expressed frustration that India has been selling a large volume of goods to the United States while the United States has been unable to sell much in return. The President also highlighted that India imports most of its oil and military products from Russia, with very little coming from the United States.
The President pointed out that India's tariff levels have reached a historical high of 50%, significantly impacting the U.S.-India partnership. The President attributed the inability of U.S. companies to sell to India to the high tariff barriers imposed by India, stating that India's tariff levels are the highest among any country. The President further noted that while India has recently proposed reducing its tariffs to zero, this offer comes too late, as it should have been made years ago.
In response to the President's remarks, the Indian Prime Minister stated that the interests of farmers, small businesses, and the dairy industry are of utmost importance. The Prime Minister assured that the government will ensure that these sectors are not adversely affected by any external pressures. The Prime Minister's statement underscores India's commitment to protecting its domestic industries and farmers, even in the face of international trade pressures.
Prior to the President's comments, the United States Trade Representative had stated that despite a federal appeals court ruling that most of the tariffs imposed by the previous administration were illegal, the current administration is still engaged in negotiations with its trading partners. The Trade Representative emphasized that these negotiations are ongoing, regardless of the court's decisions. The court's ruling, which reaffirmed an earlier decision by the international trade court, stated that the use of emergency powers to implement these tariffs exceeded the President's authority. This ruling has put the tariffs imposed on dozens of U.S. trading partners in a new legal predicament. However, the judges allowed the current administration to continue collecting these tariffs while the case is on appeal.
The President, in response to the court's decision, stated that all tariffs remain in effect. The President also criticized the Supreme Court, describing it as highly partisan and expressing confidence that the tariffs will benefit the nation with the help of the Supreme Court. The ongoing legal battles and the President's comments highlight the complex and contentious nature of U.S. trade policies, particularly in relation to India. The situation underscores the challenges both countries face in navigating their trade relationship amidst domestic and international pressures.
