The northwest region, in particular, has seen a surge in drilling activity. As of September 16, there were 13 rigs working in this area. Notably, three rigs were working just a few kilometers east of Lloydminster for Cenovus. These included Precision Drilling (PD) Rigs 146 and 254, and Akita Drilling Rig 8 [1]. Cenovus had a further five rigs in the region, with Ensign Drilling Inc. Rig 533 at Tangleflags, PD 294 and 198 west of Celtic, PD Rig 199 north of Spruce Lake, and PD Rig 197 at Edam [1].
Strathcona Resources Ltd. employed PD Rig 188 at Meota, while Baytex Energy had PD Rig 155 at Pikes Peak. Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. had PD Rig 300 at Rush Lake, east of Maidstone. Pentacor had Savanna Drilling Rig 436 working at Carruthers, north of Baldwinton, and Hemisphere Energy Corporation had Edge Drilling Rig 5 working at Marsden [1].
Moving into west central Saskatchewan, six rigs were working. Strathcona had PD Rig 297 at Plover, where it is developing a new SAGD project, and Bonanza Rig 1 near the south end of Tramping Lake. Teine Energy had Ensign Rig 351 southeast of Superb and southwest of Kerrobert, while Baytex was drilling with Savanna Rig 441 northeast of Kindersley. Ish Energy Ltd. was drilling with Eding Drilling Rig 6 just north of Kindersley [1].
In southwest Saskatchewan, two rigs were drilling. Savanna Rig 416 was drilling for Whitecap Resources Inc. north of Swift Current, while Savanna Rig 629 was drilling for North American Helium north of Ponteix [1].
In southeast Saskatchewan, 15 rigs were drilling. Tundra Oil & Gas had Stampede Drilling Inc. Rig 4 north of Beaubier and Stampede Rig 16 near the Manitoba border, north of Antler and due west of Cromer. Whitecap employed Panther Drilling Rig 2 in the Weyburn Unit near Halbrite and had Stampede Rig 17 east of Lampman, Stampede Rig 7 near Hazelwood, and Ensign Rig 423 north of Oxbow [1].
The increase in drilling activity suggests a robust demand for oil and gas exploration in Saskatchewan. This is likely driven by the province's abundant natural resources and favorable regulatory environment for energy development. However, the ongoing global energy transition and fluctuations in commodity prices may pose challenges to the industry's growth in the future.
As of September 22, 2025, at 10:45, Precision Drilling's 15-minute chart has triggered a KDJ Death Cross, accompanied by a Bearish Marubozu. This indicates a shift in the momentum of the stock price towards the downside, with a potential for further decreases. The sellers are currently in control of the market, and the bearish momentum is likely to continue.
