Portnoy's 'Greed' Meme Coin Surge and Dump: A Crypto Rollercoaster

Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, has once again made waves in the cryptocurrency world by launching and then dumping a Solana-based meme coin, this time banking on the theme of 'greed'.

On Tuesday, Portnoy launched the GREED token, featuring an image of Michael Douglas's character Gordon Gekko from the Wall Street films, famous for his "greed is good" monologue. The token quickly surged to a $41.5 million market cap, despite the current market conditions. Portnoy bought $4,200 worth of the token initially and added another $1,670 when the price dipped.

However, just half an hour later, Portnoy dumped his entire GREED token bag in one transaction, swapping it for JAILSTOOL, another token he had previously endorsed. The estimated price of the tokens at the time was $270,000. This move led to a 99% drop in GREED's market cap in just four seconds, from $12.88 million to $123,950, sparking allegations of a 'rug pull'.

In response to the backlash, Portnoy launched GREED2, but it was much less successful, rising to a $7 million market cap before falling 90% over the next five hours. Portnoy's doxxed wallet has not sold any GREED2 tokens. Amid the chaos, the original GREED token rallied back to $16.75 million before falling back down to $4.88 million. Portnoy then bought back into GREED with $12,270 and sold his bag again for approximately $14,150 just 30 minutes later.

This incident comes amid what crypto enthusiasts are calling "crime season," a period marked by an increase in questionable crypto launches and insider trading. Hayden Davis, the CEO of Kelsier and one of the creators of the controversial LIBRA token, has claimed that insider trading is rife within the meme coin space. Davis has also been linked to the Melania Trump token, and analytics company Bubblemaps has confirmed the connection between the launch teams of LIBRA and MELANIA.
