The Port of Vancouver reported a record 158 million metric tonnes of cargo moved in 2024, a 5% increase YoY. The auto, bulk, and container sectors showed strong performances, despite a challenging environment with disruptions from climate change, wildfires, and geopolitical tensions. The bulk sector led the way, with volumes up 8% to 117.9 million metric tonnes.

The Port of Vancouver, Canada's busiest and most significant gateway for trade, reported a remarkable 5% year-over-year increase in cargo volumes in 2024 [1]. With a record-breaking 158 million metric tonnes (MMT) moved, the port played a crucial role in connecting Canada to diverse markets worldwide.

Despite a challenging environment that included disruptions from climate change, wildfires, and geopolitical tensions, the auto, bulk, and container sectors demonstrated impressive resilience and growth [1]. The bulk sector led the way, accounting for 75% of the total cargo volume, with a significant 8% increase to 117.9 MMT [1].

The liquid bulk exports sector experienced a remarkable surge, with volumes up 203% to 17.1 MMT, thanks to the expanded Trans Mountain pipeline and Westridge terminal [1]. This expansion unlocked new markets in Asia for Canadian petroleum products, contributing to the sector's growth.

Petroleum exports through the port nearly quadrupled, reaching 15.2 MMT [1]. The strong performance of the bulk sector was a testament to the adaptability and resilience of the port community, despite the challenges faced.

The auto sector also showed signs of strength, with volumes increasing by 3% to 15.4 MMT [1]. This growth was supported by the continued demand for Canadian-made vehicles and the port's strategic location, enabling seamless connections to major markets.

The container sector, while facing challenges from global supply chain disruptions, managed to maintain its position as a key contributor to the port's overall cargo volume [1]. With volumes up slightly by 1% to 24.7 MMT, the sector continued to play a vital role in facilitating international trade.

The Port of Vancouver's achievements in 2024 were not only significant in terms of volume but also in their broader impact on the Canadian economy. Approximately 80% of the international trade the port enabled was Canadian trade with countries other than the United States [1]. This trade supported countless well-paying family jobs across the nation and contributed to Canada's efforts to diversify its international trade and build a strong, resilient national economy.

As the port continues to adapt to the evolving landscape of global trade, it remains committed to partnering with governments and industry to plan and deliver the long-term capacity needed to support trade through the gateway [1]. Through collaboration and innovation, the Port of Vancouver will continue to drive Canadian prosperity and serve as a vital link between Canada and the world.
