Polygon is set to implement its most intricate hard fork to date on Thursday, enhancing its proof-of-stake blockchain with a new consensus layer known as Heimdall 2.0. This upgrade aims to bolster the backbone of Polygon’s proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain by replacing legacy components from 2018 and 2019 with more advanced infrastructure.
According to Polygon Foundation CEO Sandeep Nailwal, this hard fork is the most technically complex one Polygon PoS has undergone since its launch in 2020. The upgrade is designed to improve finality, user experience, and the network’s upgradeability.
The new update will reduce the blockchain’s finality to approximately five seconds and minimize the risk of chain reorganizations beyond two blocks. This enhancement will contribute to a more stable network and secure bridges.
Nailwal also emphasized the importance of node operators preparing for the upgrade. He urged those running older versions to upgrade immediately, noting that most validators have already done so. The upgrade process on the mainnet is expected to take 30 minutes, with scripts and runbooks already available.
Nailwal advised the community to be prepared for temporary instability during the system’s core consensus engine upgrade. Heimdall’s finality will temporarily lag by about three hours, meaning the PoS chain’s ability to finalize blocks may pause or slow down for up to three hours during the upgrade process on Thursday.
This upgrade follows a significant change in the leadership structure of the Polygon Foundation. The foundation transitioned from decentralized governance to having Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal assume complete executive control as the first CEO. This shift aims to refocus the foundation’s efforts as competition in the layer-2 space intensifies.

Nailwal previously expressed the need for Polygon to move faster and more aggressively with full conviction and focus. The upgrade to Heimdall 2.0 marks a crucial step in this direction, enhancing the network’s capabilities and preparing it for future advancements.
