A 19-year-old man has been arrested in relation to a two-vehicle crash near Newcastle that resulted in the death of a 55-year-old woman and her unborn child. The incident occurred on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at around 2:40 AM on Newcastle Road, Wallsend. Police allege that the man was driving a Holden Commodore with unauthorized number plates.
The police, who were patrolling the area, signaled for the vehicle to stop. However, the driver continued to drive in a dangerous manner, leading the officers to decide not to engage in a pursuit due to safety concerns. A short time later, a second police vehicle was monitoring the Commodore on Newcastle Road, North Lambton. It's believed that the vehicle crossed onto the incorrect side of the road before losing sight of it.
Following reports of a crash in the eastbound lanes of Newcastle Road, police were called to the scene. The Commodore crashed head-on with a Hyundai sedan traveling in the opposite direction. Sadly, the passenger in the Hyundai, a woman in her 50s, died at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai, a 28-year-old woman, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being conveyed to John Hunter Hospital in a serious condition. Police later confirmed that she was 25 weeks pregnant and had lost her unborn child.
The driver and front passenger of the Holden allegedly left the scene before the arrival of police. However, the rear passengers, two girls aged 15 and 17, were treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and conveyed to John Hunter Hospital, where they both remain in serious conditions.
A crime scene was established, and a critical incident team from the Hunter Valley Police District started an investigation. The incident is being reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and oversighted by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC). Following extensive inquiries, police arrested a man at a home in Mayfield on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at around 3:15 PM. He was taken to Waratah Police Station.
Inquiries into the incident continue under Strike Force Carrarang. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to be released as they become available.
