Polestar EVs may still have back-up camera issues despite recalls and software updates, according to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. A software glitch affecting the back-up cameras on thousands of North American Polestar EVs, previously identified by Transport Canada, may still be a problem. The US agency has reopened its recall query for the affected models.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has reopened a recall query on nearly 28,000 Polestar 2 vehicles, citing ongoing concerns about rear-view camera display issues during backing maneuvers. This development follows a series of complaints from consumers who reported that the rear-view cameras continued to malfunction despite previous software updates intended to fix the problem.
The NHTSA received 109 complaints for rear-view camera failures on model years 2021 to 2025 Polestar 2 vehicles. Polestar had previously recalled certain models for similar issues in 2024 and earlier this year, proposing software updates as a remedy. However, consumers have reported that the software updates did not resolve the problem, leading to the reopening of the recall query to evaluate the adequacy of Polestar’s recall remedy [1].
Polestar, a Swedish electric vehicle (EV) maker, has three models in its global lineup, including the Polestar 2, Polestar 3, and Polestar 4. The company is planning to expand its lineup with additional models such as the Polestar 5 four-door GT, Polestar 6 roadster, and Polestar 7 compact SUV. Despite the recall query, Polestar reported a significant increase in global retail sales volume in the second quarter (Q2) of 2025, with sales rising by 38% year-on-year to an estimated 18,049 cars. For the first six months of the year, retail sales volumes grew by 51% to approximately 30,319 cars [1].
Retail sentiment around Polestar’s stock (PSNY) on Stocktwits has shifted to ‘extremely bullish’ from ‘bullish’ over the past 24 hours, while message volume has risen from ‘high’ to ‘extremely high’ levels. PSNY stock is up by 9% this year and by about 23% over the past 12 months [1].
