Archer-Daniels-Midland Company and OCOchem will build a carbon dioxide conversion facility. Archer-Daniels-Midland is a leading global processor of agricultural products, with a focus on transforming grains and oilseeds into food ingredients, fuels, and industrial products. Archer-Daniels-Midland (ADM) and OCOchem have announced a strategic partnership to build a groundbreaking carbon dioxide (CO2) conversion facility. The facility will be co-located within ADM's corn processing complex in Decatur, Illinois. This collaboration aims to convert biogenic CO2 from ADM's ethanol production stream into valuable formate molecules, which can be used in a wide variety of consumer and industrial products.

The partnership was announced on August 18, 2025, and involves OCOchem's Carbon FluX Electrolyzer technology. This technology converts water and CO2 into carbon-negative formate molecules, replacing existing fossil fuel-based formates and derivatives. The plant is expected to commence construction later this year and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.

The collaboration represents a significant step forward in demonstrating the economic and technical feasibility of converting large volumes of captured CO2 emissions into value-added liquid organic molecules. This will happen on-site in an existing manufacturing environment, establishing a new, fast, and modular approach to industrial symbiosis.

The facility will target a range of applications, including crop protection, biomass upgrading, fertilizers, water treatment, liquid syngas carriers, industrial solvents, cleaning products, metal recovery, de-icing chemicals, active pharmaceutical ingredients, and flavors and fragrances. The core use of electrochemical processing technologies enables high Faradaic efficiency, high cell productivity, 100% product selectivity, and hence no waste products.

ADM has been a pioneer in the science of carbon sequestration, the process of capturing the greenhouse gas associated with global warming and keeping it out of the atmosphere by storing it underground. The company started carbon dioxide storage some 10 years ago and rapidly ramped up operations. In 2022 alone, it injected 428,580 metric tons of CO2 deep underground beneath its Decatur plant.

This partnership not only advances ADM's strategy to lead in industrial carbon management and sustainable molecule production but also supports lower-carbon supply chains and unlocks new value across the bio-based economy.
