The launch of
Network’s v23 protocol upgrade and the Valour ETP on Sweden’s Spotlight Stock Market marks a pivotal moment in the project’s journey toward institutional adoption. These developments address long-standing governance risks, enhance security, and create a regulated on-ramp for institutional capital, positioning Pi ($PI) as a potential contender in the evolving digital-asset landscape. However, the path to sustained institutional traction remains fraught with challenges that must be critically assessed. The v23 protocol upgrade embeds a decentralized KYC authority aligned with global standards like ERC-3643, enabling trusted third-party verification while adhering to anti-money laundering (AML) requirements [1]. This shift from centralized KYC processes to a blockchain-integrated model reduces bottlenecks and enhances transparency, a critical factor for institutional onboarding. The Valour ETP, denominated in Swedish kronor (SEK) and trading on a regulated exchange, further legitimizes Pi’s accessibility. By mid-2025, the ETP reported $947 million in assets under management (AUM), signaling robust institutional confidence [2]. This regulated on-ramp allows traditional investors to access Pi through familiar brokerage platforms, mitigating liquidity constraints and bridging the gap between decentralized finance (DeFi) and traditional markets [3].
The v23 upgrade introduces a Linux Node, expanding Pi’s infrastructure beyond Windows and macOS to provide a standardized environment for developers and service providers [4]. This move aligns Pi with enterprise-grade ecosystems, reducing integration barriers for institutions. Security is bolstered by the Passkey update in v23.01, which incorporates biometric authentication (e.g., Face ID) and requires verified email addresses to activate accounts [5]. These measures align with Web3 security benchmarks and address vulnerabilities like phishing attacks, a critical consideration for institutional-grade platforms.
While
has outpaced in institutional adoption—recording $10 billion in derivatives open interest and $3.69 billion in ETF inflows in Q3 2025—Pi’s strategic focus on regulatory compliance and infrastructure offers a distinct value proposition [6]. The Valour ETP’s 1.9% management fee and SEK denomination cater to Nordic investors, a niche but growing market for digital assets [7]. However, Pi’s price volatility (trading at $0.3435 as of August 2025) and lack of a public trading mechanism for its token remain hurdles [8]. Institutional adoption metrics for Pi, such as active miners and governance participation, remain speculative until the mainnet launch, which is slated for September 3, 2025 [9].Despite these strides, Pi Network faces significant governance risks. The core team controls 82.8% of the total Pi supply and all mainnet validators, raising concerns about decentralization [10]. Validator nodes are geographically imbalanced, with 154 of 319 nodes located in Vietnam, exposing the network to regulatory risks in that region [11]. Additionally, the KYC process has been plagued by delays and unclear data-handling policies, particularly with the use of AI tools like ChatGPT for verification [12]. These issues underscore the tension between Pi’s regulatory ambitions and its decentralized ethos.
Pi’s v23 upgrade and Valour ETP launch demonstrate a clear commitment to institutional readiness, but their long-term success hinges on resolving centralization concerns and technical delays. The phased rollout of the protocol—through Testnet1, Testnet2, and Mainnet—allows for iterative improvements, minimizing disruptions [13]. Meanwhile, the ETP’s performance will be a key indicator of institutional demand, particularly as macroeconomic conditions and regulatory frameworks evolve. If Pi can sustain its AUM growth and address governance risks, it may carve out a niche in the institutional crypto market, albeit with a more cautious trajectory compared to Ethereum’s dominance.
