The Philadelphia Phillies have placed third baseman Alec Bohm on the 10-day injured list as a result of a fractured left rib. This development follows a pitch thrown by Yu Darvish that struck Bohm during a game against the San Diego Padres, leading to his initial exit from play. Though rested during the All-Star break and briefly returning, Bohm aggravated the injury during a recent match against the Los Angeles Angels.
Manager Rob Thomson disclosed that Bohm had undergone imaging that failed to reveal the fracture initially. The subsequent examination on Saturday confirmed the fracture, triggering the IL placement. Thomson refrained from assigning a precise recovery timeline but suggested that Bohm could be sidelined for three to four weeks, possibly less, depending on his tolerance level.
Over the past months, Bohm has evolved into an essential component of the Phillies’ batting lineup, recovering from a slow start to the season. Post-May, he has successfully hit a .304 average with eight home runs and a commendable on-base performance. Beyond his batting prowess, Bohm has shown improved defensive capabilities at third base, mitigating earlier critiques of his fielding skills.
To fill the vacancy left by Bohm’s absence, the Phillies recalled utility player Weston Wilson from Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Wilson has had previous stints with the major league club this season, albeit without significant impact, as reflected in his .194 batting average across 20 games. His recent performance in Triple-A suggested potential, with a slash line of .276/.396/.447 over 19 games.
The team may rotate several players including Edmundo Sosa, rookie Otto Kemp, and Bryson Stott to cover third base while Bohm remains sidelined. Sosa and Kemp are expected to contribute significantly, with Kemp having displayed versatility filling in for Bryce Harper earlier in the season. Manager Thomson has expressed confidence in the depth and adaptability of the squad to weather Bohm’s temporary absence.
Additionally, discussions have taken place regarding the possibility of introducing more outfield support or additional depth at second base, hinting at strategic moves as the trade deadline approaches. Bohm’s injury could influence these plans, as his versatility and performance at the plate and in the field are missed.
Despite these roster challenges, team members, including star player Bryce Harper, have rallied to support Bohm and the reshuffled lineup, emphasizing adaptability and resilience. Harper noted the impact and presence Bohm carries in the organization, acknowledging the need for the team to respond collectively to fill the gap left by his absence.
The Phillies are currently positioning themselves against division rivals, particularly aiming to maintain a competitive edge over the New York Mets in the division race. As the club adjusts its tactical approach, all eyes will be on players like Wilson and Kemp to assume larger roles in the interim period and contribute effectively to maintaining the team’s trajectory amidst the roster adjustments.
