Petrobras expects results from new well in Colombia soon

Petrobras and Ecopetrol have confirmed Colombia’s largest-ever natural gas discovery following the drilling of the Sirius-2 well in the GUA-OFF-0 maritime block, located 77 kilometers off Santa Marta. The well, initiated in June 2024, revealed over 6 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of gas in place, potentially increasing Colombia's reserves by 200%. The consortium, led by Petrobras International Braspetro B.V. (44.44% stake) and Ecopetrol (55.56% stake), is advancing the Production Development Project, which includes subsea infrastructure to transport gas to onshore treatment facilities.

The project requires USD 1.2 billion for the exploratory phase and an additional USD 2.9 billion for production development. If environmental licensing is secured, natural gas production could commence as early as 2027, with an estimated output of 13 million cubic meters per day for a decade. The initiative aligns with Petrobras's 2025–2029 Business Plan and emphasizes compliance with environmental regulations and community engagement.

As of March 2026, the consortium remains focused on finalizing technical and social assessments to ensure the project meets commercial viability and regulatory requirements. The discovery underscores Colombia's growing role in regional energy markets, though its economic impact will depend on infrastructure development and global gas demand dynamics.
