Perpetual futures — crypto-native derivatives that never expire, trade around the clock, and offer built-in leverage — were approved by the U.S. regulator in May 2026. The market is wrong about what they cost the companies that own the trading floors. The panic treated a retail curiosity as an institutional displacement risk. It confused retail excitement with structural threat. And it ignored the single number that makes the entire narrative dissolve.

Here is that number: on a typical day in the second quarter of 2026, S&P 500 options — the heart of Cboe's derivatives franchise — traded a notional $2 to $3 trillion. Zero-day-expiry SPX options alone averaged a record $2.3 trillion. Across all centralized and decentralized platforms, total perpetual futures notional volume averaged roughly $150 billion per day, down from a peak near $200 billion.

The existential threat to the American exchange business earns its revenue from a product class that trades 20 times more notional value every day.

The rollover fear, and why it misses the real business

The conventional bear case sounds rational. Traditional futures make money partly from the "roll" — when a trader's contract expires, they sell the near-dated contract and buy the longer-dated one, and the exchange collects fees each time. Perpetual futures never expire. No roll. No roll fees.

That is true. And it is also a remarkably small part of the economics of these companies.

Cboe's futures segment brought in $30.6 million in the second quarter of 2026, a 2 percent increase year over year. Cboe's options segment brought in $473.9 million, up 30 percent. The futures business is less than seven percent of options revenue. Even if perpetual futures eventually ate a meaningful share of the futures franchise — which itself is a fraction of the total — the damage to overall economics is bounded by arithmetic, not by narrative.

CME Group, the world's largest futures exchange, operates on a completely different economics stack. Its reported operating margin sits at 65 percent, with EBITDA margins near 72 percent and a free-cash-flow margin of 62 percent. The company generates returns on invested capital above 10 percent and returns on equity near 16 percent. This is a machine that turns nearly every dollar of revenue into profit. The question is not whether a competitor steals a sliver of futures volume. The question is whether anything in the current regulatory or economic environment can replicate that margin structure at scale.

ICE — which owns the New York Stock Exchange, commodity futures markets, and the Bloomberg Barclays index business — runs operating margins of 51 percent and an EBITDA margin of 66 percent. Its revenue declined nearly 4 percent year over year in the trailing period, but free cash flow grew 14 percent, and the company has paid dividends for 12 consecutive years while buying back shares. ICEICE-- responded to the perp threat not by defending a declining franchise but by investing $200 million into crypto exchange OKX through a 50-50 joint venture. The product difference that nobody priced in

Perpetual futures are linear instruments. A 1 percent move in the underlying produces a proportional move in your position, adjusted for leverage. Options are convex. A 1 percent move can produce a 5 percent, 20 percent, or 400 percent return depending on strike, volatility, and time decay.

Perps offer neither.

The institutional hedging business that runs CMECME-- and ICE is built on that same principle. Corporations hedge commodity exposure with CME contracts because the contracts have defined settlement dates, clearinghouse guarantees, and regulatory infrastructure. A trader who needs to lock in oil prices for October delivery does not want a perpetual contract that floats indefinitely with a funding rate.

The revenue scale that breaks the scare

Hyperliquid, the dominant decentralized perpetual-futures platform, peaked at $357 million in gross protocol revenue last year and fell to $200 million last quarter. The market priced in a threat to a $10 billion revenue stream when the actual product that perps resemble — traditional futures — represents a tiny fraction of the total, and the product that perps actually threaten the most — retail speculation on crypto — already lives offshore where American exchanges have no pricing power anyway.

Three different companies, three different exposures

The selloff treated all three exchanges as one threat. They are not.

Cboe bore the brunt because its brand is most associated with options on indices, and the retail imagination connects perpetual futures most directly with the kind of daily directional betting that Cboe's zero-day options also serve. Cboe's stock fell the furthest. But Cboe's Q2 earnings — reported well after the selloff — showed record revenue, options volume up 26 percent average daily volume, and a 6 percent increase in revenue per contract. Management raised guidance. The business grew through the perp scare.

CME Group sued the CFTC over the perp approval, arguing perpetual contracts should be classified as swaps rather than futures — a classification that would impose stricter capital requirements on platforms like Kalshi. CME benefits either way. If courts agree perps are swaps, the regulatory bar for competitors rises. If courts disagree, CME can launch its own perps on its exclusive S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures contracts. The lawsuit itself is a signal: CME does not view perps as an exit wound. It views them as a product category it can own.

ICE sits in the most interesting position. Its commodity futures franchise is institutionally deep and relationship-driven, not subject to retail churn. And its OKX joint venture gives it direct exposure to the crypto-perp economy. ICE does not need to win the battle against perps. It participates in both.

What would make the thesis wrong

The argument that perps are a nuisance, not a threat, depends on two conditions holding. First, perp volume on traditional assets — equities, commodities, bonds — must remain a small fraction of the existing options and futures market. Kalshi has filed for perpetual contracts on gold, silver, and platinum. Coinbase is launching contracts with up to 20 times leverage. If regulators approve perp-style products on broad equity indices and institutional traders actually migrate from traditional instruments, the scale argument weakens.

Second, the existing exchange franchises must continue generating revenue growth that outpaces any perp cannibalization. Cboe's Q2 results suggest this is the baseline, not the hope. If options volume plateaus or declines while perp volume surges on competing platforms, the denominator flips.

The observable test is straightforward: watch whether perp volume on equities and commodities grows into a material fraction of the $2–3 trillion daily options market. If it stays below 5 percent — which, given the structural differences in payoff mechanics, it likely will — then the selloff was exactly what it looked like: a narrative scare that the next earnings report would cure.

The crowd was right to notice perpetual futures. They were wrong to treat retail leverage enthusiasm as institutional displacement. The exchanges that survived the selloff did not survive because the threat never existed. They survived because the threat was real but small, and their businesses were large.
